Audiscript privacy policy
Effective date: to be set at release
Audiscript is an app for recording audio, transcribing it, taking timestamped notes, and listening to podcasts. It is made by Kevin Kess ("we", "us").
This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.
The short version
- Your recordings, transcripts, summaries and notes are stored on your device and, if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud account. We cannot see them there.
- If you use cloud AI for a transcript or summary, the audio or text for that request is sent through our server to our AI provider, processed, and returned. Our server does not keep it.
- On-device transcription never sends your audio anywhere.
- We do not sell your information, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.
- We have no accounts, and we do not collect your name, email address or contacts.
Information the app handles
Content you create
Recordings, imported audio, transcripts, summaries, personal notes, timestamped notes, tags and playlists are stored on your device.
If you subscribe to Audiscript Pro and leave iCloud sync on, this content is also stored in your private iCloud account (iCloud Drive and CloudKit) so it appears on your other devices. That storage belongs to you and is run by Apple. We have no access to it.
Microphone
The app uses the microphone only while you are recording. Recordings stay on your device (and in your iCloud account if sync is on) unless you choose to send one for cloud transcription.
Cloud AI: transcription and summaries
When you choose cloud transcription, the audio for that recording is sent over an encrypted connection to our server (hosted by Cloudflare), which passes it to Groq, Inc. to be transcribed. When you ask for a cloud summary, the transcript text and any notes you include are sent the same way.
- Our server passes the request on and returns the result. It does not store your audio, transcripts, summaries or notes, and does not write them to its logs.
- Groq processes the content to produce the result. Its handling of that content is described in Groq's privacy policy.
You can avoid this entirely by using on-device transcription.
On-device transcription
On-device transcription runs on your iPhone or iPad. Your audio is not sent to us or to anyone else. The first time you use it, the app downloads the speech model over the internet; that download contains no information about your recordings.
Usage counts
Cloud AI has a monthly allowance. To count it, our server stores:
- a one-way scrambled identifier (a SHA-256 hash). For subscribers it is derived from your App Store purchase record; for free users it is derived from your iCloud account. We cannot turn it back into your Apple Account, name or email;
- the month; and
- the number of seconds of cloud audio used in that month.
Nothing about the content of your recordings is stored with these counts. Counts are deleted after 12 months.
Checking that requests are genuine
- Subscribers: the app sends Apple's signed record of your subscription so the server can confirm it. The record does not include your name, email or payment details.
- Free users: the app uses Apple's App Attest service to show that a request comes from a genuine copy of Audiscript on a real Apple device. The server stores a key for that app installation. It does not identify you.
Purchases
Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your payment details. Apple's privacy policy applies to the purchase.
Podcasts
Podcast search uses Apple's podcast directory. Podcast feeds, artwork and episodes are downloaded directly from each podcast publisher's servers, which will see your IP address and may count the download, as with any podcast app. Your subscriptions, playback positions and podcast notes are stored on your device and, if sync is on, in your own iCloud account.
What we do not collect
- No analytics, advertising or tracking software is included in the app.
- No name, email address, phone number, contacts, location or photos.
- The app sends us no crash reports. If you have agreed to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may share anonymous crash reports with us.
Who receives information
| Who | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Apple (iCloud) | Your content, in your own iCloud account, if sync is on | Syncing between your devices |
| Apple (App Store, App Attest) | Purchase and device checks | Subscriptions and preventing misuse |
| Cloudflare | Cloud AI requests in transit; the usage counts above | Hosts our server and usage database |
| Groq, Inc. | Audio and text you send for cloud transcription or summaries | Producing the transcript or summary |
| Podcast publishers | Ordinary download requests, including your IP address | Delivering feeds and episodes |
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
How long information is kept
- Your content: until you delete it. Deleting a recording in the app removes it from your device and, when sync is on, from your iCloud account.
- Usage counts: 12 months, then deleted.
- App installation keys (App Attest): kept while the service operates, so an installation doesn't have to be checked again each time.
- Cloud AI content: not kept by our server. See Groq's policy for its own retention.
Your choices
- Use on-device transcription to keep audio on your device.
- Turn iCloud sync off in the app's Settings to keep content on one device only.
- Delete any recording, transcript, summary or note in the app at any time.
- Delete the app to remove everything stored on that device. Content already in your iCloud account stays there until you delete it: either in the app before removing it, or on your device under Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Storage.
- To ask about, or request deletion of, the usage counts connected to you, email us your Usage ID. You can copy it in the app under Settings → About → Usage ID. We need it because nothing else links you to your counts.
Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights to access, correct or delete personal information, or to object to how it is used. Contact us to make a request.
Children
Audiscript is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Security
Requests to our server use encrypted connections (HTTPS). Content in your iCloud account is protected by Apple. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the effective date above.
